Families 4 Children

Families4Children (F4C)
is an innovative community initiative that seeks to raise awareness of the need to recruit foster parents from multicultural and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds (CALD) to provide short and long-term care.

A foster carer is a person or couple who takes care and raises children who are no longer able to stay in their home environment.

Who can be a foster carer?

  • Must be 21 years or over
  • Has experience raising their own children or helped with other children
  • Renting, buying or owning your own home
  • From all ethnic or cultural background
  • Has enough space in their home to accommodate a child/children
  • You can request your preferred gender and age range of foster child
  • You can request your preferred religion of foster child
  • The foster child can be enrolled in a school close to your home
  • Support the child’s religious and cultural needs

Recruitment for foster care is through the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS). This process requires several compulsory checks, training and assessment. It can take around 6 months from an initial enquiry to being authorised as a Foster Carer. All Foster Carers receive support and regular home visits from their caseworkers as well as training opportunities and access to support services. FACS will try not to split up siblings so you may be asked to foster more than one child (you always have the opportunity to accept/decline).

Types of foster care

  • Respite: Planned request for carer (time limited).
  • Short Term: A few weeks to several months
  • Long term: From placement to 18 years of age.
  • Emergency: From one day to two weeks (possible extension of the time requested).
