Session 1: Culturally Competent Service Provision: Australian Muslim Women

Are you prepared to work with this fast-growing population? From hand shakes and eye contact to standards of modesty and privacy, cultural sensitivity and cultural competency are essential. Whether they are newly immigrated or highly assimilated, building relationships with Muslim women patients and clients takes time, knowledge, and an intentional lack of prejudice. This session will involve a skills-building framework that will provide intimate cultural viewpoints and a supportive environment where your questions and concerns are welcome.

Session 2: Islam and Violence against Women: Culture and Practice

This training will outline the issues concerning Islam as a faith and where it stands on the issue of violence against women. The session will cover the basic religious underpinnings and it will highlight some of the growing misconceptions often held about the issues. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in an open and frank environment.

The training is intended to allow participants to explore the issues surrounding violence against women such as domestic abuse, rape, forced marriage, FGM and honour killing from a faith perspective and the role the Islamic faith plays in understanding them. Also, the difference between faith and culture will be identified and how the two interact together in a complex way.

About Mission of Hope Cultural Competency Training Programs
Mission of Hope’s objective is to increase knowledge, skills, competency, and awareness about the diverse Australian Muslim community, its traditions, beliefs and practices in Australia. Adherents to Islam in Australia include approximately 340, 392 of the Australian population identify as Muslim (ABS 2006). While there is a growing population of Australian born Muslims many are also immigrants and refugees from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. To promote cultural competency and better service to all Australians, it is important that service providers gain an awareness of the community and the beliefs and practices of its members and develop skills to address issues as they arise within the delivery of service.
