What is Millati Islami?
Millati Islami is a unique program that began in the United States by recovered drug and alcohol users of the Muslim faith that were addicted to the substances. There were many programs that were ideal for other faith groups that have been running based on other faith traditions. Millati Islami is the first concerted effort that recognises the religiously and culturally appropriate beliefs, practices, and traditions of the Muslim community. Like the beneficial programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and other support groups, they were originated by those struggling with recovery from drugs and alcohol. The program is currently being revised by a psychologist to include basic cognitive behavioural techniques to encourage change and eliminate unhelpful thinking habits, whilst keeping within the core faith principles of the program.
Millati Islami is a fellowship of men and women, joined together on "The Path to Peace". This specific program run by Mission of Hope will be tailored to assist Muslims who are released or in community release program to address the issue of drug and alcohol addiction, whilst preventing re-entry into the criminal justice system. The first trial group will be a male only group.
Millati Islami is a support group where participants will share their experiences, strengths and hopes while recovering from their addictions to mind and mood altering substances.
The program will be facilitated by a psychologist of the Muslim faith, where eventually the program will be developed to be self-sustaining for group members to run the support groups in different areas of need. It is hoped that this program can also be used in other Australian states where there is a need to cater for Muslims struggling with alcohol and other drug addictions.
